TBH, and I'm not gonna pull out the "blicky" or anything as the youth say, but I don't understand the impulse that so many people have to tear down people who are essentially just exercising their creative energies. As I've gotten older I've realized the drive to create is generally absent in most people and for those who do have it, they tend to put that into building a family (which is healthy and valid for the most part).
Sure maybe someone might be a grifter or whatever, but who is and isn't a grifter these days? A lot of professional music stuff even on the "indie" circuit involves whoring yourself to an album release cycle and then dealing with the social media game and hawking shirts and etc. Like are those guys grifters? What is the line between grifting and not grifting? Doing everything for free?
Sure maybe you go in the Haz/Spanky Tanky direction but in the grand scheme of things that isn't exactly significant and unless you're on some Avakian level shit it's not exactly going to "dilute the movement" (which barely exists in Western countries) to have a bunch of weirdos being clandestinely paddled lovingly on their albino beet red buttocks by a red headed RT journalist.
The fact that Mr. Houdini has received death threats for posting is more indicative of where this subreddit has been headed more than anything else. I've been here a while and have noticed that people are quicker to anger, snarkier and far more likely to engage in the sort of trite, memetic information upvote downvote dance that has poisoned the entire internet.
Isn't just making little one liners for some nebulous social cachet a grift? I'm not gonna go full Adam Lanza Cultural Philistine or anything, but this desire to punish any sort of earnestness, however misguided or stupid or cringe is in my estimation partially why American culture feels so rotten. It's not like anyone is forcing you to give Monsieur Erik Houdini money, and he's making a zine of sorts which most of you guys who are ostensibly punk rock, sex having buttchugging everclear types like to look at anyway.
Maybe I'm just imagining it but this subreddit has been degrading a little. It feels like it has devolved into the same sort of place everywhere on the internet where it's just a hate box to point at things that make you upset with little else to offer.
I don't know. There's just something very empty about the internet as it exists in the present day. I was looking at some pictures of The Gas Station where GG Allin had his final show in Alphabet City, New York City and how there was this community of creatives doing things probably no less worse than whatever this is. Could something like that still exist in today's cynical culture? I don't know.
I'm not into this stuff, but in today's world of depressing, corporatized strip malls and culture anything that exists outside of that seems like a bright spot, even if I don't like it or am not into it

Today's article reminded me of Ida B Wells lynching reports. Only site that would cover the horror as it is. Thank you.

Houdini is living proof of the big joke that is so called meritocracy under capitalism. For every petite bourgeois failson there are at least a dozen Houdinis scraping by.
